Defining Modern Design

As an interior designer with a passion for modern aesthetics, I find that the essence of Modern Style speaks to my design philosophy—it's all about creating a space that's minimal, balanced, and purposefully designed. I love to harness the power of open concepts and bathe interiors in natural light, using significant pieces that speak volumes with their simplicity. Interior design is a canvas that's always in motion, and I'm fascinated by how modern design styles are a tapestry woven from historical threads, cultural narratives, and the leaps we've made in technology.

What is modern design?

The different styles of modern interior design serve as a sort of blueprint for creating spaces that have a cohesive and unified space. It's like they give us a language to describe what we're seeing and feeling in a room. Where do these styles come from? Some are born out of specific moments in history. Take Mid-century Modern, for example. It's a style that really took off in the postwar era, capturing the optimism and innovation of the time. Others emerge from a collective love for certain elements—like textures, colors, and materials. If you're into the calming, minimalist vibes of Japandi, you're probably a fan of its blend of Japanese simplicity and Scandinavian functionality. Japandi blends the best of Japanese and Scandinavian design. Modern Classic is a style that is seems to encompass a wide variety of modern aesthetics when in reality it is much for specific than some people may realize. Midcentury modern mixed traditional elegance with modern lines, offering clean, organic shapes that feel both retro and fresh. Organic Modern, is also unique, bringing in natural elements to create a space that's warm and inviting.

So, why does all this matter? Understanding these styles can be like a shortcut to figuring out your own design preferences. As an interior designer, I've seen firsthand how a well-chosen design style can act as a foundation, allowing individual personality to shine through in a space. Once you know what you like, you can build upon your own style preferences and create spaces that feel personal and uniquely yours. In the end, you're not just decorating a space; you're crafting an environment that reflects who you are, which is a principle I hold dear in every project I undertake. In the upcoming weeks, we will explore 4 essential modern design styles: Japandi, Modern Classic, Midcentury Modern, and Organic Modern. Look for next week’s post explaining the key components of Japandi style and how to create a space that embodies its essential elements.

About Me

At JFD Creative, we're all about crafting spaces that tell a story, each with its own unique identity. I'm Jessica Fischer, the heart behind the designs, and I've got a knack for mixing up furniture, lighting, art, and textures that not only add warmth but also a bit of soul to every project. My design eye comes from a life spent soaking up cultures in the Philippines, Japan, and Turkey, which means I love throwing in a splash of color, a touch of modernist charm, or a piece with a history that speaks. Whether it's working with beloved items my clients already have or starting from scratch, I draw from my colorful experiences and my formal training at the New York School of Interior Design.
